Web Center History

For those curious about the beginnings of this web site, we provide the following brief history. It was originally designed and maintained on a Macintosh running a UNIX server by 1994-1995 Information Systems (Multimedia) classes directed by Dr. Greg Madey (ADMS). This original Mac server was known as "Synapse."

To ensure continuity on the website, it was entrusted to Linda Poje, new Webmaster, and two student web developers (Greg Feist and Logan Spies) in August, 1995. The first version of the site was awarded the "4-Star Site" designation from Magellan (McKinley Group) in January, 1996. The EMBA area was substantially revamped by John Breen during the summer of 1996. Also during that year, the site was switched from the UNIX "Synapse" to a PC environment on "Habanero," a Dell200 located in the Computer Lab.

In 1998, the server farm increased as "Godzilla" (formal name "Hermes"), a Dell 350, was added to house online courses. By the summer of 1999, both servers were centrally located in the Web Center. The website currently runs on "Gandalf," a Dell Optipex GX260 with a two gigahertz Pentium four processor.

In May, 2003, the position of College of Business Webmaster was eliminated, and Ms. Linda Poje was re-assigned to another position on campus. Steve Schindler and Dona Bowman, BSA Computer Lab, were charged with over-seeing the web site.

Since 1995, 30+ talented KSU students have had the opportunity to work on the Web Center team and bring it into the New Millennium.
